Questions, answered
What a photo can and cannot tell you about your home — and what it costs.
How accurate is a photo-based home damage assessment?
It is a fast first read, not a measurement. NestScore looks at the photo for the visual signals that go with common problems — the colour and shape of a stain, cracking, discolouration, edge patterns — and turns them into a likely cause, a severity range and a home repair estimate. A clear, well-lit photo of the right area gives a sensible answer; a dark, blurry or distant one gives a rough answer. Treat it as a well-informed second opinion you can walk into a conversation with, not as a verdict.
Is it a substitute for a licensed inspection or an engineer?
No, and every report says so. A photo cannot measure the width of a crack, test for moisture, or see inside a wall, a chimney or a foundation drain. Anything structural, electrical or gas-related — or anything that is actively getting worse — needs a licensed professional on site. NestScore helps you decide who to call and what to ask; it does not replace them.
What can't the assessment see?
Anything hidden: what is behind the drywall, under the slab, inside the electrical panel, under the shingles or inside a wall cavity. It also cannot detect moisture that has left no visible mark yet, and it cannot decide on its own whether a crack is cosmetic or structural. If you suspect one of those, use the estimate to budget for an inspection rather than a repair.
Where do the home repair estimates come from?
Each report builds its range from published regional labour rates and typical material prices for that trade, then shows a low and a high. They are regional ranges, not a quote: access (a basement floor versus a third-floor ceiling), permits and hidden damage found mid-job can all move the price. Our articles list the published sources behind any figure we cite, with dates.
What makes a good photo?
Three photos beat one: the whole area from a step back, a close-up of the damage itself, and the same close-up with something for scale — a coin, a tape measure or your hand. Use daylight or switch the lights on, keep the camera square to the surface, and avoid zooming. One problem per photo gives a sharper answer than a wide shot of the whole room.
Do you keep my photos?
No. The assessment runs in your browser, on your own device, and the photo is never uploaded to us. The privacy policy spells out exactly what we do store: your email address, your plan, and how many assessments you have used this month.
What does it cost, and how do I pay?
Three assessments are free, no card needed. After that, plans are C$9.99 for 25 assessments a month, C$19.99 for 50 and C$29.99 for 100, in CAD, USD or EUR. Payment runs through PayPal — your PayPal balance or any major credit or debit card — and you can cancel anytime from your account.
